E-Learning Courses
National Staff Orientation Training This course will help you explain the responsibilities of being a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary National Staff, which is a complex organization with a wide array of responsibilities and activities. In order to serve on the Staff, a person needs specialized knowledge. This National Staff Orientation course was developed to help you understand how the national staff is organized and operates to advance the underlying objectives of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Once you complete this course, submitted your application, and received a letter and/or certificate of appointment, you are eligible to wear the national staff medallion.
Navigation Rules This course prepares members to take the NavRules Series 90 and the NavRules Series 70 closed book exam; the Series 90 NavRules exam is only for current coxswains and others who have passed the closed book exam. It provides a comprehensive review of the Navigation Rules (International - Inland) using the material available in the US Coast Guard Navigation Center and a series of interactive quizzes that test the knowledge of the rules.
NavToolkit & Maptech Chart Navigator (Tools) The NavToolkit spreadsheets support calculations often used in our patrols and re-qualification exercises; the README spreadsheet provides the instructions you need to use these spreadsheets. You need to have Excel installed on your PC to use these spreadsheets. Right click on the file and select Save as to download it to your PC.
These functions were adapted from the Aviation Formulary. Two new spreadsheets were added for Set & Drift and Conversion calculations; they are based on the formulae found in the Chapman Piloting text. Links to the Chart Navigator (must be installed in your computer) and View it on a Map (an interactive service sponsored by Google) are also included in the spreadsheets.
The calculations supported by the NavToolkit go hand in hand with the features included in the Chart Navigator; using them together will help you plot courses, compute distance, time and speed, plan routes and do other similar types of calculations.
To download Maptech Chart Navigator and the online charts click the links listed below:
o And enter the city/State or Zip Code for the charts that you want. On the next page click Select All or Select the Charts you want to download.
I welcome your feedback and suggestions for the NavToolkit. Please contact Juan C. Hernandez, PhD, BC-TDO for additional information.
