Flotilla Commander Academy
Excellent performance in the Flotilla Commander is critical to the success of the Auxiliary. This is an extremely important position because every Auxiliarist is a member of a Flotilla, from the newest recruit to the National Commodore. Therefore, it is essential that the Flotilla Commander understand the responsibilities incumbent in the position, can recruit new members, inspire current members to achieve their goals, provide necessary member training, and select competent staff officers. In a word, there must be extensive training for the Flotilla Commander (FC) to succeed. The FC must have considerable knowledge of the Auxiliary, skills in working with people, and know where to get help when needed.
In an optimum situation, a District would present a Flotilla Commander Academy (FCA) for all newly elected FCs sometime after election and before installation and formally taking office. If the District does not have an Academy, a Division might hold one for its FCs. The FCA should have at least the elements covered in the following three presentations. The sections listed below contain a PDF outline of the material, and a PowerPoint presentation to accompany it.
· Flotilla Meeting Workbook .PDF | PPT · Hook, Line, and Sinker .PDF | PPT
If an FCA is not available, the FC should study and understand these sections as a basic orientation. Some other areas you might want to consider exploring for additional training include: Flotilla records and necessary forms, Flotilla finances, member training, operations, mentoring, CGA uniforms and Protocol.
All Flotilla Commanders are encouraged to select a mentor, an experienced Auxiliarist who will work with you to advance your knowledge in your current position, prepare you for your next level of opportunity, answer questions, listen to your ideas and provide suggestions to help you to achieve them if reasonable. Also the mentor can provide you with the feedback necessary to amend those ideas to develop something feasible, be a sounding board, and a trusted friend.
Best wishes for a successful tenure as Flotilla Commander – the most important leadership role in the Auxiliary.
