What Works:
We'd like to help spread the word and get some
visibility for the good things that are going on in the field.
- the activities that work well to increase member
training, enhance training effectiveness and improve unit performance!
Sharing these ideas will spark creativity and help other members around
the country improve their training efforts. The individual submitting
the idea will receive full credit for the idea (as well as their
Flotilla, Division and District) and we will publish an email address if
the individual wishes to be contacted by others. Email submissions made
to BC-TSW
Flotilla 14 was experiencing the
same problems many flotillas have: Lack of response to the
boating safety program.
After a lot of study we made several
changes in the program. First, we met with the Commanding
Officer of Station Destin and requested we move our classes to
the station; he agreed. This change allows the public to become
better acquainted with the Coast Guard personnel, and it enables
the Coasties to explain their roles first hand. During the
lunch period (lunch is served on the mess deck by the galley
crew), one of the station's Coasties takes the class on a tour
of the station and boats. This is followed by a short knot
tying class conducted by one of the auxiliary members. At the
end of the class we have a drawing for a hand held GPS that is
open to all students that pass the course.
We charge $50.00 for the class which
includes the cost of the text book, lunch, and the opportunity
to win the G.P.S. The break down is $40.00 for the class and
text book, $5.00 for the lunch ($3.75 to the galley $1.25 to the
Coast Guard morale fund) and $5.00 to pay for the G.P.S.. We
have found the most effective way to control the number of
people that show up for the class is to collect the fee in
advance, with no refunds except in extreme emergencies. We have
ten classes a year and so far each one has been full with the
excess carried over to the following month. If you have any
questions please contact me.
